Finally it reaches our hands Oltretomba, the long-awaited third chapter by The Ossuary, a spectacular Doom band ready to receive an important confirmation after the audience and critics positive feedbacks received with the two previous works "Post Mortem Blues" and "Southern Funeral". The common thread between the songs on the album is essentially the tribute to the Italian cinematographic culture of the 70s and 80s and, in particular, to authors such as Fulci, Argento, Bava and Morricone's music. Worth to mention that three of the four founding members were active in the legendary Death Metal band Natron.
Oltretomba opener's role belongs to RATKING, a track that captures since the first listening through its Rock and Doom stride. Stefano "Stiv" Fiore's voice imprisons as well as Domenico Mele's guitar, thanks to an incendiary solo, but it's the rhythmic section by Max Marzucca on drums and Dario "Captain" De Falco on bass that makes the piece incredible. KYRIE ELEISON starts with a more cadenced but very evocative rhythm and then explodes with an extraordinary power. Prog elements of the early 70's blending with an always inspired guitar, make, among several rhythm changes, the track really interesting.
SERPENT MAGIC, first single taken from Oltretomba, is a phenomenal occult doom track; the played or sung part by each component is well blend as in a magic formula. The refrain is trance-like while the guitar melody hypnotizes after just few seconds. A more Rock 'n Roll mood, still of great class in the following FOREVER INTO THE GROUND, where our musicians pay homage to certain sounds dear to bands like The Doors, giving them new life and freshness, really chilling.
The following ORBITS charms for its almost southern rock style in the initial part which then turns into an uncompromising Doom/Hard Rock. The eight minutes pass without a single weak point and among different texture changes, a song of great class that perfectly summarizes, in my opinion, all the influences of The Ossuary. In the first few seconds, CRUCIFER has that western touch loved so much by those lovers of the proposed genre (like myself). The mighty Rock that springs from it is crazy good and wraps the listener up as if by owning it. MOURNING STAR, like a time machine, seems to bring back in the Prog Rock of the 70s while DEVILS IN THE NIGHT SKY is an almost out of body experience such is its ability, through an obsessive Rock/Prog/Doom rhythm only scratched by a biting guitar, to transport the unsuspecting listener.
The task of closing the album is given to the title track OLTRETOMBA with its eight minutes of apotheosis. A melodic intro is enlightened by the splendid and still evocative voice of Stiv who leads the band also in the rest of the piece in a Hard Rock worth of the true masters and with a skill and mastery that only very few bands can boast.
With Oltretomba, The Ossuary not only confirmed the important results of the first two chapters of their saga but also they raised the level even more. An album to be purchased and listened to relentlessly, to catch all the different facets, even the smallest ones, to be appreciated listening after listening. DOOM ON !!!

Giunge finalmente nelle nostre mani Oltretomba, il tanto atteso terzo capitolo discografico dei The Ossuary, spettacolare band Doom attesa ad una importante conferma dopo il successo di critica e pubblico ricevuto con i due precedenti lavori “Post Mortem Blues” e “Southern Funeral”. Il filo conduttore tra i brani presenti nell’album è sostanzialmente il tributo alla cultura cinematografica degli anni 70 e 80 italiana ed in particolare verso autori come Fulci, Argento, Bava ed alla musica di Morricone. Ricordiamo che tre dei quattro membri fondatori militavano nella mitica Death Metal band Natron.
Il ruolo di opener di Oltretomba spetta a RATKING, un pezzo che attraverso il suo incedere rock e doom rapisce sin dal primo ascolto. La voce di Stefano “Stiv” Fiore cattura in pieno così come la chitarra di Domenico Mele, grazie ad un incendiario assolo, ma è la sezione ritmica di Max Marzucca alla batteria e di Dario “Captain” De Falco al basso che rende il pezzo incredibile. KYRIE ELEISON parte con un ritmo più cadenzato ma molto evocativo per poi esplodere con una possanza fuori dal comune. Elementi Prog dei primi 70’s che si fondono ad una chitarra sempre ispirata rendono, tra diversi cambi di ritmo, la traccia davvero interessante.
SERPENT MAGIC, primo singolo estratto da Oltretomba, è una traccia occult doom fenomenale; la parte suonata o cantata di ciascun componente si mescola come in una formula magica. Il refrain è da trance mentre la melodia chitarristica ipnotizza già dopo pochi secondi. Mood più Rock 'n Roll ma di gran classe nella successiva FOREVER INTO THE GROUND, dove i nostri omaggiano certe sonorità care a band come i The Doors, dandogli però nuova linfa e freschezza, da brividi.
La successiva ORBITS coinvolge per il suo stile quasi southern rock nella parte iniziale che si trasforma poi in un Doom/Hard rock senza compromessi. Gli otto minuti scorrono senza neanche un punto debole e tra diversi cambi di sonorità, una traccia di gran classe che raccoglie a mio parere tutte le influenza dei The Ossuary in una summa perfetta. CRUCIFER ha nei primi secondi quel tocco western che tanto piace agli amanti (me compreso) del genere musicale proposto. Il possente Rock che ne scaturisce è da urlo e avvolge l’ascoltatore come possedendolo. MOURNING STAR, come una macchina del tempo, sembra riportare nel Prog Rock degli anni 70 mentre DEVILS IN THE NIGHT SKY è quasi da esperienza extracorporea tale è la sua capacità, attraverso un ritmo ossessivo Rock/Prog/Doom scalfito solo da una pungente chitarra, di trasportare l’ignaro ascoltatore.
Il compito di chiudere l’album è dato alla title track OLTRETOMBA con i suoi otto minuti di apoteosi. Un’intro melodica viene illuminata dalla splendida ed ancora evocativa voce di Stiv che guida la band anche nel resto del pezzo in un Hard Rock da veri maestri e con una classe e maestria che solo pochissime band a mio avviso possono vantare.
Con Oltretomba i The ossuary non solo hanno confermato quanto di importante fatto nei primi due capitoli della loro saga ma hanno alzato ancora di più il livello. Un album da acquistare e consumare senza sosta tante sono le sfaccettature, anche minime, da apprezzare ascolto dopo ascolto. DOOM ON!!!
