Here we are... October 23rd, 2021 is the date for the release party of "X" (read TEN) and Forge of Steel could certainly not miss the event and miss the opportunity to listen to the new, as well as the tenth, album of the band that gave birth to the concept and representation of Horror Music. The splendid cover, designed once again by Alex Horley, depicts the vampire Steve (evil as never before) on a fiery red background together with Freddy, Al, Glenn and Mark and it has the merit of throwing us into the deliberately dark and oppressive atmosphere characterizing the whole work which, although not being a real concept, for many of the songs it has as a common thread the specific period we are living and the way in which to redeem or free ourselves.
As mentioned by the frontman himself in the press release of the new record, and as it can be easily understood considering who we are talking about, the meanings behind the choice of title X are not ordinary or obvious but full of symbolism and esotericism. Without going too far on this aspect, but rather stimulating the curiosity of the research, we limit ourselves remembering that the number "Ten" symbolizes perfection, as well as the annihilation of all things having in itself the Unity that made everything and the Zero, a symbol of matter and Chaos from which everything came out, and which is considered one of the most important numbers as the sum of the first four digits (1+2+3+4=10), thus expressing a sense of wholeness, which translates into the examined work by bringing together the entirety of the universal and artistic principles contained in the first four band's Albums/Seals. Last, but not least, the meaning we wish to mention is linked to the "Divine Comedy". In Dante's Inferno, the tenth canto takes place in the sixth circle, in the City of Dis, where are punished the heretics, that is the rebels, the free spirits hostile towards Dogma, those who choose to take themselves out of the ordinary way, to which this work is dedicated.
The opener THE BLACK PLAGUE is a track with a Heavy approach and an immediate and captivating refrain that well evokes the plagues that afflict us in this historical moment and to which the text refers. A rhythm that captures since the first listen and that, through Steve's voice and Gregorian chants (really suggestive) in the central part, anticipates the first single ZORA widely praised in our review a few weeks ago and supported by a truly exceptional video. UNDER SATAN'S SUN is a lethal track written by Steve and Andy Panigada, inebriating thanks to an oriental and almost Goth Rock intro, with a refrain well articulated by Steve's warm voice that involves in a rhythm capable of take the listener as in a macabre dance. Persuasive female vocalizations in the final part accentuate the feeling of possession by this magnificent sound.
In my opinion, THE REBEL GOD has in its construction the unforgettable imprint of Freddy Delirio, co-author of the song. A pounding and inspired rhythm introduces the chorus followed by a breathtaking guitar solo that captivates and enchants. The sense of being possessed by the Entity goes on... We are all rebels! THE TEMPLE OF THE RAIN is introduced as the upcoming second single extracted from X and the reason is clear at the first listening (we had also the pleasure and honor of attending the premiere of the new video clip, made by the talented Andrea Falaschi already director of ZORA's video). The persuasive melody dominated by a splendid female voice, represented in video with the always hypnotic and sensual dance of Dhalila, anticipates Steve's singing, first warmer and then more wicked in a refrain that enchants. Here too we mark Freddy Delirio and JJ Masini lasting stamp in the writing that enriches the track while the text recalls the thelemic mythology of Aleister Crowley, recalling the "Do What Thou Wilt" times.
RIDE THE DRAGON is the album's fastest track, a Punk/Speed Metal rhythm that shakes hard between solos and outbursts, and where Steve's aggressive singing still proves enthralling. The creative verve of Steve/Andy duo continues in the following suite SUSPIRIA (QUEEN OF THE DEAD), a song inspired by the Italian horror/erotic comic of the same name and for which the adjective fantastic is just an understatement. Ancient sounds introduce a cadenced and powerful rhythm where Steve seems to tell at first while then evoke Suspiria in a pleasantly oppressive and dark refrain. Guitar solos, violins and female voices make this piece a truly unique masterpiece. The following HERETICS is more intimate song in which the absolute protagonist is the charismatic voice of Steve in a song that captures and carries with an almost ballad mood. The contribution of JJ Masini continues in the next and epic, for its beauty, THE WORLD IS DOOMED where still a powerful Goth sound enriches Steve's incredible performance. Piece to discover and rediscover especially for the guitar work and a persistent rhythm.
Album's closure, with a bang, is entrusted to LUCIFER, fallen angel and bringer of knowledge. A unique and strongly Rock mood that assaults and makes everybody sing “My name is Lucifer! I Bring you freedom, I Bring you light! Call me and I'll be there! I’ll give you beauty, I’ll give you might!". A piece that, thanks to its explosive charge, will become a must for any true fan
X is a work that captures and surprises in some ways, as Death SS have always done after all. Once again Entity has been able to give us something unique and unrepeatable thus we can only confirm the below vote that was already widely foreseen in our review of the single ZORA.

Death SS never betray. Those who expected an album similar to what has been done in the past may have been disappointed but it will also mean that they are not real fans or that they have never fully understood Death SS, a band, a creature, which has always subverted rules and styles, anticipating and creating, and always offering something new and difficult to categorize. I was really and pleasantly impressed by this new work that recalls a lot of the darker tones of the past production with references also to Steve's solo production and that fixes another phenomenal tile in a unique discography that deserves to be heard more and more in its whole (click here for our special retroSSpective!). Last consideration, if X is the Whole, what can there ever be after it?!? I have no doubt that Death SS will amaze us with new and exciting surprises! See you soon!

Ci siamo... 23 ottobre 2021 è la data del release party di "X" (leggasi TEN) e Forge of Steel non poteva certamente mancare all'evento e perdere l'opportunità di ascoltare in anteprima il nuovo, nonchè decimo, lavoro della band che ha dato vita al concetto ed alla rappresentazione della Horror Music. La splendida copertina, disegnata ancora una volta da Alex Horley, raffigura su uno sfondo rosso fuoco il vampiro Steve (maligno come non mai) davanti a Freddy, Al, Glenn e Mark ed ha il merito di immergerci sin da subito nell’atmosfera volutamente oscura e oppressiva caratterizzante l’intero lavoro che, pur non essendo un vero e proprio concept, ha come filo conduttore per molti brani il periodo particolare che stiamo vivendo ed il modo in cui riscattarci o redimerci.
Come dichiarato dallo stesso frontman nel comunicato stampa di presentazione del disco, e come facilmente intuibile visto di chi si sta parlando, i significati dietro la scelta del titolo X non sono banali o scontati ma carichi di simbologia ed esoterismo. Senza dilungarci troppo su questo aspetto, ma stimolandovi anzi la curiosità della ricerca, ci limitiamo a ricordare che il numero "Dieci" simboleggia la perfezione, come anche l’annullamento di tutte le cose avendo in sé l’Unità che ha fatto il tutto e lo zero, simbolo della materia e del Caos dal quale tutto è venuto fuori, e che è considerato uno dei numeri più importanti in quanto somma delle prime quattro cifre (1+2+3+4=10), esprimendo quindi un senso di totalità, che si traduce nell'opera in questione nel riunire la globalità dei principi universali e artistici contenuti nei primi quattro Album/Sigilli della band. Ultimo, ma non per importanza, significato che ci preme menzionare è legato alla Divina Commedia. Nell’Inferno di Dante, il decimo canto si svolge nel sesto cerchio, nella città di Dite, dove sono puniti gli eretici, ossia i ribelli, gli spiriti liberi insofferenti verso il Dogma, coloro che scelgono di portarsi fuori dalla via ordinaria, al quale questo lavoro è dedicato.
L’opener THE BLACK PLAGUE è un brano dall’approccio Heavy con un refrain immediato ed accattivante che bene evoca le piaghe che ci affliggono in questo frangente storico ed a cui il testo fa riferimento. Un ritmo che prende sin dal primo ascolto e che, attraverso la voce di Steve ed i canti gregoriani nella parte centrale (veramente suggestivi), anticipa il primo singolo ZORA ampiamente lodato nella nostra recensione di qualche settimana fa e supportato da un video davvero eccezionale. UNDER SATAN’S SUN è una traccia micidiale scritta a quattro mani da Steve ed Andy Panigada, inebriante grazie ad un’intro orientaleggiante e quasi Goth Rock, con un ritornello scandito dalla calda voce di Steve che coinvolge in un ritmo in grado di possedere l’ascoltatore come in una danza macabra. Suadenti vocalizzi femminili nella parte finale non fanno altro che accenture la sensazione di possessione dal parte del magnifico sound.
A mio modo di vedere, THE REBEL GOD ha nella costruzione l’impronta indelebile di Freddy Delirio, coautore del brano. Un ritmo cadenzato e ispirato introduce il ritornello seguito da un assolo di chitarra mozzafiato che cattura e rapisce. Continua il senso di possessione da parte dell’Entità... Siamo tutti ribelli! THE TEMPLE OF THE RAIN viene anticipato come il secondo singolo estratto da X ed il motivo si capisce al primo ascolto (abbiamo il piacere e l’onore di assistere anche alla prime del nuovo videoclip, realizzato anche questo dal bravo Andrea Falaschi). La suadente melodia sovrastata da una splendida voce femminile, in video rappresentata con la danza sempre ipnotica e sensuale di Dhalila, anticipa il cantato di Steve prima caldo e poi più maligno in un refrain che incanta. Anche qui si nota il timbro indelebile di Delirio e JJ Masini alla scrittura che impreziosisce la traccia mentre il testo richiama la mitologia thelemica di Aleister Crowley, rimandando ai tempi di Do What Thou Wilt.
RIDE THE DRAGON è il pezzo più veloce dell'album, un ritmo punk/speed metal che scuote forte tra assoli e sfuriate, e dove il cantato aggressivo di Steve si dimostra ancora trascinante. La verve creativa del connubio Steve/Andy prosegue nella successiva suite SUSPIRIA (QUEEN OF THE DEAD), brano ispirato all’omonimo fumetto horror/erotico e che definire fantastico è dir poco. Suoni antichi introducono un ritmo cadenzato e possente dove Steve sembra prima raccontare e poi evocare Suspiria in un refrain piacevolmente oppressivo e tenebroso. Assoli di chitarra, violini e voci femminili rendono questo pezzo un capolavoro davvero unico. Più intima la successiva HERETICS in cui l’assoluta protagonista è la carismatica voce di Steve in un brano che prende e trasporta con un mood quasi da ballad. L’apporto di JJ Masini prosegue nella successiva ed epica, per la sua bellezza, THE WORLD IS DOOMED dove ancora un possente sound Goth arricchisce la magnifica performance di Steve. Pezzo da scoprire e riscoprire soprattutto per il lavoro di chitarra ed un ritmo sempre incalzante.
La chiusura, col botto, è affidata a LUCIFER, angelo caduto e donatore di conoscenza. Un mood unico e fortemente Rock che assale e fa cantare già al primo ascolto “My name is Lucifer! I Bring you freedom, I Bring you light! Call me and I’ll be there! I’ll give you beauty, I’ll give you might!”. Un pezzo che grazie alla sua carica esplosiva diventerà un must per ogni fan che si rispetti.
X è un disco che rapisce e per certi versi sorprende, come d’altronde i Death SS hanno sempre fatto. L’Entità ci ha saputo regalare ancora qualcosa di unico ed irripetibile e noi di conseguenza non possiamo che confermare con il voto sotto quanto già ampiamente previsto nella recensione del singolo ZORA.

I Death SS non tradiscono mai. Chi si aspettava un disco simile a quanto fatto in passato ne sarà forse rimasto deluso ma vorrà anche dire che non è un vero fan o che non ha mai capito fino in fondo i Death SS, una band, una creatura, che ha sempre sconvolto canoni e stili, anticipando e creando, e offrendo sempre qualcosa di nuovo e difficilmente catalogabile. Sono rimasto davvero e piacevolmente colpito da questo nuovo lavoro che riprende molto delle tonalità più oscure della produzione dei noSStri con richiami ai dischi della produzione anche solista di Steve e che fissa un altro fenomenale tassello in una discografia unica e che merita di essere ascoltata più e più volte nella sua interezza (cliccare qui per la nostra speciale retroSSpettiva!). Chiudo con una considerazione, se X è il tutto, cosa potrà mai esserci dopo?!? Non ho dubbi che i Death SS sapranno stupirci con nuove ed emozionanti sorprese! A preSSto!
