Silent Obsession come from Algeria and are born from the will of the guitarist and mastermind Max Marginal to export the extreme Algerian metal scene beyond national borders. The band made its debut as a solo project in 2017 and eventually became a four-element combo; Max himself is now joined by Danny (vocals, guitars), Manil (bass) and Ben Der (drums). After the first EP "Lost" of 2020, Silent Obsession released this "Countdown" in July 2021, with the intention, marked by the words of Max himself, to depict a devastating global apocalypse.
Style of the EP is a furious Technical Death Metal that manages to express the right amount of violence without being overly brutal. The two fast and sharp songs (excluding the intro) effectively convey the idea of an apocalyptic world, devastated and in lack of resources, a world inspired by the science fiction classic "Mad Max", quoted as a source by the band itself. The desperate cries, explosions and a final "heartbeat" of APOCALYPTIC MANIFESTATION are the intro to END OF AN ERA, which begins by showing off the more "Technical" approach with guitars that chase each other creating grooves and riffs tending almost to Thrash. Vocals alternates between a deep modulated growl then on higher registers without moving to scream and emaining in a more typically Black fashion. Drums and bass create an excellent job, with various and violent grooves avoiding the use of excessive blast beats. EXHAUSTED RESOURCE demonstrates a more heavily Heavy/Thrash soul than the previous track. The guitarwork in the riffings and solo, at times dissonant, is really beautiful, which also proves a good compositional ability.
The two songs featured in the EP Countdown demonstrate a good compositional level and, despite being self-produced, the final quality turns out to be really high. Tracks portray the dark side of humanity well by demolishing preconceptions with an uncommon aptitude for experimentation. We trust that these guys can express themselves at their best with a more extensive work and that it will surely open many doors.

I Silent Obsession vengono dall’Algeria e nascono dalla volontà del chitarrista e mastermind Max Marginal di voler esportare la scena metal estrema algerina al di fuori dei confini nazionali. La band esordisce come solo project nel 2017 diventando poi con il tempo un combo a quattro elementi; allo stesso Max sono oggi affiancati Danny (voce, chitarre), Manil (basso) e Ben Der (batteria). Dopo il primo EP “Lost” del 2020, i Silent Obsession pubblicano questo “Countdown” nel luglio del 2021, con l’intenzione, marcata dalle parole dello stesso Max, di dipingere una devastante apocalisse globale.
Lo stile dell’EP è un furioso Technical Death Metal che riesce ad esprimere la giusta dose di violenza senza essere eccessivamente brutale. Le due canzoni (esclusa l’intro) veloci e taglienti rendono efficacemente l’idea di un mondo apocalittico, devastato e senza più risorse, mondo ispirato dal classico di fantascienza “Mad Max”, citato come fonte dalla stessa band. Le grida disperate, le esplosioni ed un finale battito “cardiaco” di APOCALYPTIC MANIFESTATION fanno da intro a END OF AN ERA, che inizia dando sfoggio alla componente più “Technical” con chitarre che si inseguono creando groove e riffing tendenti quasi al Thrash. La voce alterna tra un growl profondo modulato poi su registri più alti senza sfociare nello scream restando in un campo più tipicamente Black. La batteria ed il basso fanno un lavoro egregio, con groove vari e violenti senza ricorrere all’uso eccessivo di blast beats. EXHAUSTED RESOURCE dimostra un’anima più marcatamente Heavy/Thrash rispetto al brano precedente. Davvero bello il lavoro delle chitarre nei riffing e nell’assolo, a tratti dissonante, che dimostrano anche una buona capacità compositiva.
Le due canzoni presenti nell’EP Countdown dimostrano un buon livello compositivo e, pur essendo auto prodotto, la qualità finale risulta essere davvero alta. Le tracce rendono bene il lato oscuro dell’umanità demolendo preconcetti con una attitudine alla sperimentazione non comune. Confidiamo che questi ragazzi possano esprimersi al meglio con un lavoro più esteso e che sicuramente gli aprirà molte porte.
