Anno Mille is the debut album by Sommo Inquisitore, the band formed by the Supreme Inquisitor of Metal Giuseppe "Ciape" Cialone and Piero Arioni (drums), both known for their militancy in Rosae Crucis, together with Andrea Mattei dealing with guitars, bass, and keyboards. From the very first listening of PESTILENTIA, precursory single of this work, I was pleasantly impressed by the direct and straightforward Epic Heavy with sung in Italian alternating with parts in Latin and a riffing that keeps the attention always at the maximum level.
The other seven tracks of the album help to consolidate the first impression, allowing at the same time to enjoy all the sides of this work that immediately strikes hard with the obscure ANNO MILLE, from the epic and cadenced beginning that then develops into more complex arrangements in which the presence of the keyboards gives an even more atmospheric touch before Ciape's voice, assisted also by powerful choirs, describes with skilled effectiveness and uncommon charge the drama of the Middle Ages, concept of the disc that depicts its fears, wars, tortures and superstitions. Lyrics are refined and direct, as might have been expected considering the background, and over the course of the album they contribute to create particularly theatrical moments inspired by artists such as King Diamond and Hell.
The beginning of TORQUEMADA is really intriguing, the guitars draw epic arrangements that move the song towards a heavier and oppressive style that perfectly renders the figure of the first great inquisitor. One of the strengths of the whole work is certainly Andrea's great work on guitars, with well-chosen and captivating arrangements and riffs, solos between heavy and melodic always highly inspired. In the ballad ANGÉLE DE LA BARTHE (French woman known to have presumably been the first put to death by witchcraft) the violin, masterfully played by Eleonora Giosuè, also joins the stage and, together with the guitar, gives the piece a strong Folk character that blends perfectly with the classic Heavy. The Folk influence is also present in the following LA DANZA DELLE STREGHE, more inclined towards classic Heavy and where the voice becomes more loaded, and full of theatricality. The Inquisitor pushes even more on the accelerator with LA MANO DI DIO to close the album with the cadenced track TORTURA.
Without any fear of heresy, I consider Anno Mille a great Heavy Epic album, intense and direct, expertly spiced up with Folk hints. Already among the best releases of the current year!

Anno Mille è il debut album del Sommo Inquisitore, ovvero la band formata dal Sommo Inquisitore del Metallo Giuseppe “Ciape” Cialone e da Piero Arioni (batteria), noti entrambi per la militanza nei Rosae Crucis, insieme ad Andrea Mattei ad occuparsi di chitarre, basso e tastiere. Fin dal primo ascolto di PESTILENTIA singolo anticipatore del lavoro, sono stato piacevolmente impressionato dall’Epic Heavy diretto e schietto con cantato in italiano alternato a parti in latino ed un riffing che tiene sempre alta l’attenzione.
Le altre sette tracce che compongono l’album non fanno altro che consolidare la prima impressione, permettendo al contempo di gustarsi tutte le sfaccettature di questo lavoro che parte fortissimo con l’oscura ANNO MILLE, dall’inizio epico e cadenzato che apre poi ad atmosfere ed arrangiamenti complessi in cui la presenza delle tastiere dona un tocco ancora più atmosferico prima che la voce di Ciape, coadiuvata anche da possenti cori, descriva con magistrale efficacia e carica non comune la drammaticità del Medioevo, concept del disco che ne dipinge le sue paure, guerre, torture e superstizioni. I testi sono ricercati e diretti, come ci si poteva aspettare considerato il background, e nel corso del disco contribuiscono a creare momenti particolarmente teatrali ispirati da artisti quali King Diamond ed Hell.
Davvero intrigante l’inizio di TORQUEMADA, le chitarre disegnano arrangiamenti epici che muovono la canzone verso uno stile pesante ed opprimente che rende alla perfezione la figura del primo grande inquisitore. Uno dei punti di forza dell’intero lavoro è sicuramente il gran lavoro di Andrea alle chitarre, con arrangiamenti e riff azzeccati e accattivanti, assoli tra l’heavy ed il melodico sempre ispiratissimi. Nella ballata ANGÉLE DE LA BARTHE (donna francese nota per essere presumibilmente stata la prima messa a morte per stregoneria) entra in scena anche il violino, suonato magistralmente da Eleonora Giosuè, che insieme alla chitarra dona al pezzo un carattere fortemente folk che si miscela perfettamente con l’Heavy classico. L’influenza Folk resta presente anche nella successiva LA DANZA DELLE STREGHE, più spinta verso l’Heavy e dove la voce si fa più carica e densa di teatralità. L’Inquisitore spinge ancor più sull’acceleratore con LA MANO DI DIO per concludere con la più cadenzata TORTURA.
Senza timore alcuno di eresia dico che per me Anno Mille è un grandissimo album di Heavy Epic intenso e diretto, sapientemente condito da venature Folk. Già tra le migliori uscite dell’anno in corso!
