“Twelve gold knights for twelve zodiac signs…”. Raise the hands if you have never heard about this. I am sure (I really hope) I shall see few hands up since those words have hanged around with many of us during our childhood… and more! There is no other key to understand this album, Trick or Treat have created and published and incredible concept based entirely on the Saint Seiya manga saga of the “Twelve houses” by bringing all their songwriting experience in this various and complex work that represents, in each song, the characteristics of one of the Athena’s Gold Knights.
Alle, Guido, Luca V., Leo and Luca S., together with exceptional guest musicians such as Alessio Lucatti (Deathless Legacy, Vision Divine) master of the keyboards’ Cosmo in the whole album and Yannis Papadopoulos (Beast in Black) as guest voice in “Gemini” started more than one year ago with a successful production path that included a crowdfunding campaign and the presentation of the album one song per month in correspondence with the monthly zodiac sign (and live during concerts).
AVE ATHENA’s narration and mighty choirs introduce the knights and the upcoming battle to the Sanctuary that begins at the house of ARIES “Stardust Revolution” with a classical power metal song that immediately shows the Trick or Treat’s songwriting style with an happy-power metal piece where all the components are well combined and exalted by Alessandro Conti’s voice. TAURUS “Great Horn” moves towards more hard rock territories with a heavy and solemn pounding tone and an amazing bridge crescendo that leads to the chorus to be sung loud. Keyboards are much present and creating an incredible atmosphere across the whole song. Starts fast the next GEMINI “Another Dimension”, inviting to start headbanging since the beginning and especially during the amazing refrain through the alternated voices of Alle and Yannis, really at ease in this track. The great guitars work from Guido and Luca is emphasized by the fast solo and the precious arrangements that fill the third knight’s song.
Mystical and mysterious mood in the house of CANCER “Underworld Wave” that adds another tile to the beautiful stylistic mosaic that is this flawless album. The doubts of Aiolia are well depicted in LEO “Lightning Plasma” a really inspired song. The atmosphere changes with VIRGO “Tenbu Horin”, the sound is slowing down and becoming more solemn in a quest to understand the reality of the knight who is the closest to the divinity. Another proof of a very high level songwriting makes Virgo one of the best pieces of the album, enriched by choirs, guitars and keyboards evocative arrangements and the incredible voice of Alle showing that he is in the Pantheon of greatest metal voices of all time!
Shortest song for the oldest (and friendliest) of knights LIBRA “One Hundred Dragons Force” that marks the passage to the next track SCORPIO “Scarlet Needle” a great speed power song reaching its climax in chorus where guitars and keyboards are creating superb melodies again. SAGITTARIUS “Golden Arrow” slows down the battle with a fascinating guitar arpeggio that introduces the first mid-tempo of the album, a ballad-like loaded with emotions and pathos for the knight who died saving the life of the child Athena. Powerful classical arrangements, surrounded by the bass/drums duo made by Leone and Luca, are creating a song that is really beautiful and deserves to be ranked very high. CAPRICORN “Excalibur” opens the throttle again unleashing Alle’s voice high and powerful like the knight’s soul redeemed in time to help the Saints in their fight.
A touch of prog for AQUARIUS “Diamond Dust” that, without any loss of focus, keeps the level high providing us with another great trial of the two guitarists Guido and Luca running after each other before leaving the scene to the majestic keyboards/synth by Alessio in (my sign!) PISCES “Bloody Rose”. The second and last mid-tempo that gives space to the incredible vocal performance of Alessandro nestled in a choral sublime realization by all band’s members that well mixes genres and styles giving the song an evocative old fashion mood.
LAST HOUR is a poetic outro, intimate and profound, recalling the opening intro of the album in its choirs and driving to the closure of this precious album that surely represents the most mature work by Trick or Treat in an uncommon peak of style and creativity.

“Dodici cavalieri d’oro per dodici segni zodiacali …”. Alzate le mani se non lo avete mai sentito. Sono certo (lo spero) di vedere pochissime mani dal momento che queste parole hanno circolato intorno a molti di noi durante la giovinezza… ed oltre! Non ci sono molte altre chiavi per capire quest’album, i Trick or Treat hanno creato e pubblicato un incredibile concept basato interamente sulla saga delle “Dodici Case” del manga Saint Seiya (I Cavalieri dello Zodiaco in italiano) portando tutta la loro incredibile esperienza creativa all’interno di questo lavoro vario e complesso che rappresenta, in ogni canzone, le caratteristiche di uno dei Cavalieri d’oro di Atena.
Alle, Guido, Luca V., Leo e Luca S., insieme ad ospiti di eccezione come Alessio Lucatti (Deathless Legacy, Vision Divine) maestro del Cosmo delle tastiere su tutto l’album e Yannis Papadopoulos (Beast in Black) come cantante ospite in “Gemini”, hanno dato il via oltre un anno fa ad una riuscita attività di produzione di cui hanno fatto parte una campagna crowdfunding e la scelta di presentare le canzoni dell’album una al mese in corrispondenza del relativo segno zodiacale (ed in alcuni casi anche live ai concerti).
La narrazione ed i potenti cori di AVE ATHENA introducono i cavalieri e la incombente battaglia al Santuario che parte dalla casa di ARIES “Stardust Revolution” con una canzone di power metal di stampo classico che mostra immediatamente lo stile dei Trick or Treat con un pezzo happy-metal dove tutte le componenti sono ben amalgamate ed esaltate dalla voce di Alessandro Conti. TAURUS “Great Horn” si muove verso territori più hard rock mostrando un tono più cadenzato e solenne ed un incredibile bridge in crescendo che introduce un ritornello da cantare a squarciagola. Le tastiere la fanno da padrone creando una incredibile atmosfera attraverso tutta la canzone. Inizia con il botto la seguente GEMINI “Another Dimension”, invitando fin dall’inizio ad uno sfrenato headbanging, specialmente in corrispondenza dello spettacolare ritornello, accompagnando l’alternanza delle voci di Alle e Yannis, davvero a suo agio nella canzone. Il grande lavoro di Guido e Luca alle chitarre è fortemente evidenziato dal veloce assolo e dai preziosi arrangiamenti presenti in tutta la traccia dedicata al terzo cavaliere.
Un mood mistico e misterioso riempie la casa di CANCER “Underworld Wave”, canzone che aggiunge un altro tassello allo splendido mosaico musicale che è rappresentato da questo sublime album. I dubbi di Aiolia sono ben rappresentati in LEO “Lightning Plasma”, canzone davvero ispirata. L’atmosfera cambia con VIRGO “Tenbu Horin”, il suono si fa più lento e cupo, solenne nella ricerca della conoscenza del cavaliere che si considera esso stesso il più vicino alla divinità. Ennesima prova di una altissima capacità compositiva, Virgo è uno dei migliori pezzi dell’album, impreziosito da cori ed arrangiamenti evocativi di chitarra e tastiere con l’incredibile voce di Alle che dimostra di avere un posto sicuro nel Pantheon delle voci metal di tutti i tempi!
La canzone più corta è dedicata al più anziano (e simpatico) dei cavalieri LIBRA “One Hundred Dragons Force” che marca il passaggio verso la successiva traccia SCORPIO “Scarlet Needle”, una bella canzone speed power che raggiunge il suo apice nel ritornello dove chitarre e tastiere creano ancora una volta delle superbe melodie. SAGITTARIUS “Golden Arrow” rallenta la battaglia con un affascinante arpeggio di chitarra che introduce la prima mid-tempo dell’album, una quasi ballad carica di emozioni e pathos per il cavaliere che trovò la morte nell’atto di salvare la vita dell’infante Athena. Arrangiamenti classici di grande impatto, supportati dal duo basso/batteria di Leone e Luca, rendono questa canzone una gemma davvero brillante e meritevole di voti altissimi. CAPRICORN “Excalibur” preme nuovamente sull’acceleratore scatenando la voce di Alle alta e potente come l’anima del cavaliere pentitosi in tempo per aiutare i cavalieri nella loro lotta.
Un tocco di prog in AQUARIUS “Diamond Dust” che, senza perdere un colpo, mantiene il livello in alto fornendo un’altra grandissima prova del duo di chitarre Guido e Luca, inseguendosi l’un l’altro prima di lasciare spazio alle maestose tastiere/synth di Alessio in PISCES “Bloody Rose” (il mio segno!). La seconda ed ultima mid-tempo lascia ampio terreno all’incredibile tecnica vocale di Alessandro innestata in una sublime realizzazione corale da parte della band tutta che riesce a mescolare generi e stili dando alla canzone un fascino evocativo della vecchia scuola.
LAST HOUR, outro poetica molto intima e profonda, richiama l’intro dell’album con i suoi cori e ci guida verso la chiusura di questo album splendido e completo che indubbiamente rappresenta, in un raro picco di stile e creatività, l’opera più matura dei Trick or Treat.
