Ten years are quite a long time between two albums but Alessandro Del Vecchio, producer and mastermind of Edge of Forever, has not spent this period resting or relaxing. As producer, sound engineer and multi-instrumentalist artist he has collaborated in several projects with national and international artists and, finally after ten years and after having resurrected his creature in 2016, he wrote and produced Native soul, successor of previous Another Paradise from 2009.
Alessandro counted on the help of experienced musicians such as Aldo Lonobile on guitars (Death SS, Secret Sphere), Nik Mazzucconi on bass (Labyrinth, Sunstorm – played also on previous album) and Marco Di Salvia on drums (Node, Hardline) to produce Native Soul, an album inspired by native Americans traditions and cults, dedicated to humanity, to Mother Earth and to the respect we owe her and to the Great Spirit, creator of all life on Earth.
THREE RIVERS opens the album, a sung poem that describes the sad condition of the Indian warrior while the soft sound of distant drums announce the upcoming battle. Drums are louder and pounding in the following NATIVE SOUL that, among the tribal war sounds, shows an excellent hard rock/AOR and exalts the vocal traits of Alessandro as a mature and powerful singer.
Never surrender is the leitmotiv of PROMISED LAND, proceeding in the same American AOR arrangements and reaching its climax in the poetic and catchy chorus. Fast horse riding in the next CARRY ON that on a heavier rhythm incite to “don’t be a fool and carry on” with one of the best refrains of the album enriched then by a powerful guitar solo played by Aldo.
TAKE YOUR TIME brings on a more hard rock field with its lilting sound creating a song veiled with sadness but hopeful at the same time in which the keyboards (by Alessandro) are weaving a unique harmonic amalgam. DYING SUN and I MADE MYSELF WHAT I AM are proceeding in the same hard/heavy path both in terms of music and lyrics showing a very skilled band harmonious band, particularly noticeable in the latter the drum patterns by Marco and the “solo duet” in which Aldo and Alessandro are chasing each other in a symphonic fashion. Between the two previous songs there is time for the ballad SHINE, whose intimist mood is well expressed by the melodic combination of guitar and keyboard melt with the vocal performance over the extremely profound lyrics.
WAR, together with the last two songs, are showing various influences compared to previous songs in terms of music arrangements. The same War recalls traces of hair metal, while WASH YOUR SINS AWAY has got glimpses of heavy symphonic in the keyboard and guitar melodies that makes this song, in my opinion, one of the best of the album. RIDE WITH THE WIND closes the album with a mid-tempo hinting at soft power metal sounds with even a touch of early doom giving to this work, together with the other songs, unique characteristics of novelty and freshness.

Dieci anni sono un tempo decisamente lungo come intervallo tra due albums ma Alessandro Del Vecchio, produttore e mente degli Edge of Forever, non ha certamente passato questo periodo con le mani in mano. Come produttore, sound engineer e polistrumentista ha collaborato in svariati progetti con artisti nazionali ed internazionali e finalmente, dopo aver resuscitato la sua creatura nel 2016, ha scritto e prodotto Native Soul, successore del precedente Another Paradise del 2009.
Alessandro si è avvalso dell’aiuto di talentuosi musicisti quali Aldo Lonobile alle chitarre (Death SS, Secret Sphere), Nik Mazzucconi al basso (Labyrinth, Sunstorm – ed anche sul precedente lavoro) e Marco Di Salvia alla batteria (Node, Hardline) per quest album ispirato alle tradizioni e vicende dei nativi americani dedicandolo all’umanità, alla Madre Terra e al rispetto che le dobbiamo ed al Grande Spirito, creatore della vita sulla Terra.
THREE RIVERS è l’opening dell’album, una poesia cantata che ci rende partecipi della triste condizione del guerriero indiano mentre ascolta in lontananza l’incedere ritmico di tamburi lontani che annunciano la prossima battaglia. I tamburi risuonano più forti e vicini nella successive NATIVE SOUL che, tra ritmi tribali di guerra, mostra un ecellente hard rock/AOR esaltando le capacità vocali di Alessandro come cantante maturo e potente.
Non arrendersi mai è il leit-motiv di PROMISED LAND, che calca lo stesso stile AOR di matrice americana e raggiunge uno stupendo climax nell’orecchiabile e poetico ritornello. Si cavalca veloci nella successiva CARRY ON che, su un ritmo più heavy ci spinge a guardare sempre avanti con uno dei migliori ritornelli dell’album arricchito da un potente assolo di chitarra suonato da Aldo.
TAKE YOUR TIME porta su un terreno più hard rock creato da un suono ritmato che genera, allo stesso tempo, un velo di tristezza e speranza nel quale le tastiere (suonate dal solito Alessandro) riescono ad intrecciare un’armonia unica. DYING SUN e I MADE MYSELF WHAT I AM procedono entrambe sul filone hard/heavy in termini sia di arrangiamenti che di testi, mostrando una band ben amalgamata e ricca di talento, espresso in maniera particolare nel drumming di Marco e nel doppio “assolo” in cui Aldo e Alessandro si inseguono a vicenda con uno stile sinfonico ed armonioso. Tra le due c’è tempo per la ballad SHINE, il cui profondo senso intimista è ben espresso dalla combinazione di chitarra e tastiere unito allo stile vocale che rendono il testo di una emozionalità davvero intensa.
WAR, insieme alle ultime due canzoni, si discosta un po’ dalle precedenti canzoni mostrando influenze diverse negli arrangiamenti musicali. La stessa War richiama a tratti un classico hair metal, mentre WASH YOUR SINS AWAY mostra echi di heavy shymphonic nelle linee melodiche di chitarra e tastiere che fanno di questa canzone, a mio parere, una delle migliori dell’album. RIDE WITH THE WIND saluta l’album presentando un mid-tempo che accenna a dei suoni quasi power metal con un tocco di classico doom dando a questo brano, ma anche a tutto l’album, un senso di originalità e freschezza davvero unico.
