In 2020 sees the light Occulte Fantastique, second intriguing album by American doomster Briton Rites led by Howie Bentley, founding member in 2006, able to draw lymph in the composition of the disc from sacred monsters of the genre such as Black Sabbath and Witchfinder General and shuffling the cards in an absolutely original way also introducing elements related to the occult in a sound that engages from the very first piece THE MASQUE OF SATAN, where the Doom/Stoner is brought to levels of excellence and where the singing, even if clean, is evocative to the highest degree.
MY WILL BE THINE has a catchier, more Rocky rhythm, but it is Phil Swanson's voice that draws attention as if they were words spoken by a storyteller who holds you to the headphones, while the guitar solos in the central part of the track are really inspired and captivating. In the following IN HELL I WILL RULE the initial riff is wicked cool and the work of the rhythm section composed by John Leeson on bass and Corbin King on drums is to be highlighted in a song that moves on a more Speed fashion.
Still Doom, the real one and for connoisseurs, takes over in THE DEMON LOVER, where the lesson given by the masters Black Sabbath is set to music in an exemplary way as well as in the following STRANGE BUT BEAUTIFUL and THE WIZARD'S PIPE where the catacombs mood takes over by loosening the pace in an evident way as if you were pulling a hand brake in full acceleration and the result is exciting. THE WITNESS returns to faster rhythms as opposed to the final title track OCCULTE FANTASTIQUE which instead moves the bar again on a slow and oppressive Doom.
The passion that the band has towards Occult Doom in all its forms is clear and with this record it pays homage to it as best it could not. Occulte Fantastique is a work that fans of the genre must hold highly in consideration as one of the most inspired productions of 2020.

Vede la luce nel 2020 Occulte Fantastique, secondo intrigante album dei doomster statunitensi Briton Rites capitanati da Howie Bentley, membro fondatore nel 2006, capace di trarre linfa nella composizione del disco da mostri sacri del genere quali Black Sabbath e Witchfinder General e mescolando le carte in maniera assolutamente originale introducendo inoltre elementi legati all’occulto in un sound che coinvolge sin dal primo pezzo THE MASQUE OF SATAN dove il Doom/Stoner è portato a livelli d’eccellenza e dove il cantato seppur pulito è evocativo all’ennesima potenza.
MY WILL BE THINE ha un ritmo più catchy, più Rock, ma è la voce di Phil Swanson ad attirare l’attenzione quasi fossero parole pronunciate da un cantastorie che ti incolla alle cuffie, mentre risultano ispirati e accattivanti gli assoli di chitarra nella parte centrale del pezzo. Nella seguente IN HELL I WILL RULE il riff iniziale è da paura ed il lavoro della sezione ritmica composta da John Leeson al basso e da Corbin King alla batteria è da sottolineare in una traccia che assume un carattere più Speed.
Ancora il Doom, quello vero e da intenditori, prende il sopravvento in THE DEMON LOVER, dove la lezione impartita dai grandi padri Black Sabbath viene messa in musica in modo esemplare così come nelle successive STRANGE BUT BEAUTIFUL e THE WIZARD’S PIPE dove il tutto assume caratteristiche catacombali allentando il ritmo in maniera evidente come se si tirasse un freno a mano in piena accelerazione ed il risultato è entusiasmante. THE WITNESS ritorna su ritmi più veloci al contrario della conclusiva title track OCCULTE FANTASTIQUE che invece sposta ancora l’asticella su un Doom lento ed oppressivo.
Risulta chiara la passione che la band ha verso l’Occult Doom in tutte le sue forme e con questo disco gli rende omaggio come meglio non poteva fare. Occulte Fantastique è un lavoro che i fans del genere devono tenere altamente in considerazione in quanto una delle produzioni più ispirate del 2020.
