The year 2020 recently passed has had, and will certainly have, repercussions in society and in the life of each of us. It is therefore not surprising that the difficulties, the fear, the sense of helplessness find full expression through the sensitivity of artists in the most varied fields. This is exactly the case of Jason Roberts who, with his solo-project Breaths, gives birth to an Alternative Rock/Doom/Metalcore album tormented and influenced by the chaos and anxieties of the past period.
Album also takes inspiration from personal events not related to the pandemic such as an episode of sleep paralysis that occurred immediately after the birth of Jason’s child and it also proposes to pass on a message of hope and joy, inspired by the fact that he has always had family by his side during this darkest period. All this is expressed from the musical point of view in a fairly clear way, since the opener, as well as title-track, LINED IN SILVER, through a strong alternation between melodic and sweet lines, ambient occasionally, alternating seamlessly with an Alternative/Metalcore characterized by a scream / growl singing and by a rhythm not excessively tense with a distortion always present in the background that characterizes what is called Shoegaze (a derivation from Noise Pop / Rock and Neo-Psychedelic).
In the following THE WEIGHT & THE BELLOWS, mood remains strongly melancholic and obscure while the musical style stands on tones close to Heavy/Doom mixed with modern arrangements, which includes some interesting riffs, as in the second part of the song, flavoured by clean and ethereal vocals. One of the best songs of the work as well as the next LIKE WIRES in which the rhythm section is more solid and it creates an Alternative/Groove Metal supported by the predominant scream and growl vocals especially in the second part, highlighted by a remarkable guitar working. A YEAR ON FIRE is one of the most anguishing pieces (not surprisingly from the title) with a sound closer to an obsessive Industrial Metal from start to finish. The modernity of the proposed sound also extends to IN NIGHTMARES, a track with a nice Heavy/Doom beginning and excellent guitar riffs, which remains slow and rhythmic for most of the duration, and which perhaps would have benefited from a lower vocal style, despite the litany vocals in the middle of the second part perform well. The final triptych includes THE FORGOTTEN ONES, a song more Alternative Rock/Metal oriented, and THE INHERENT EMPTINESS, where the clean / scream alternation returns, which in my opinion add little to the rest of the album and at the final IN REPOSE, a slow, dreamy track, fleeing to the hope of peace and serenity.
Lined in Silver is a complex album not an easy listening, as it was on the other hand guessed from its genesis, heaviest tracks and parts manage to create a sense of anguish diluted by the most melodic moments. Despite being self-produced, it is done well, with clear and clean sounds that capture the listener making him a real participant in anguish and darkness. An absolutely interesting and fully promoted work.

L’anno 2020 da poco trascorso ha avuto e avrà sicuramente strascichi nella società e nella vita di ognuno di noi. Non stupisce pertanto che le difficoltà, la paura, il senso di impotenza trovino piena espressione tramite la sensibilità di artisti nei più svariati campi. È questo appunto il caso di Jason Roberts che, con il suo solo-project Breaths, dà alla luce un disco di Alternative Rock/Doom/Metalcore sofferto ed influenzato dal caos e dalle ansie del periodo.
In realtà, l’album prende anche inspirazione da eventi non direttamente legati alla pandemia come un episodio di paralisi notturna occorso subito dopo la nascita del figlio e si propone di passare anche un messaggio di speranza e gioia, date appunto dal fatto di avere avuto sempre la famiglia a fianco durante il periodo più oscuro. Tutto ciò viene espresso dal punto di vista musicale in maniera abbastanza chiara, sin dall’opener nonché title-track LINED IN SILVER, tramite una forte alternanza tra linee melodiche e vocali molto dolci, melodiose, ambient a tratti, alternate senza soluzione di continuità con un Alternative/Metalcore caratterizzato da un cantato scream/growl e da un ritmo comunque non eccessivamente tirato con una distorsione sempre presente in sottofondo che caratterizza quello che viene chiamato stile Shoegaze (una derivazione dal Noise Pop/Rock e Neo-Psychedelic).
Nella successiva THE WEIGHT & THE BELLOWS il mood resta fortemente melanconico e oscuro mentre lo stile si attesta su toni vicini all’Heavy/Doom mischiati con un arrangiamento moderno, che presenta alcuni riff davvero interessanti, come nella seconda parte del brano, il tutto condito da voci pulite ed a tratti eteree. Una delle canzoni migliori del lotto come anche la successiva LIKE WIRES in cui la sezione ritmica è più solida a creare un Alternative/Groove Metal supportato dalle vocals in scream e growl preponderanti soprattutto nella seconda parte, dove si nota anche un bel guitar working. A YEAR ON FIRE è uno dei pezzi più angoscianti (non a caso dal titolo) con un sound più vicino all’Industrial e ossessivo dall’inizio alla fine. La modernità del sound proposto si estende anche a IN NIGHTMARES, traccia con un bell’inizio Heavy/Doom e ottimi riff di chitarra, che resta lento e cadenzato per buona parte della durata e che avrebbe forse beneficiato di uno stile vocale più basso, nonostante il cantato litanico a metà della seconda parte renda davvero bene. Il trittico finale include THE FORGOTTEN ONES, brano più Alternative Rock/Metal e THE INHERENT EMPTINESS dove torna prepotente l’alternanza clean/scream, che a parere mio aggiungono poco al resto dell’album ed in chiusura IN REPOSE, traccia lenta, sognante, in fuga verso la speranza di pace e serenità.
Lined in Silver è un album complesso e non di facile ascolto, come era d’altra parte intuibile dalla sua genesi, le tracce e le parti più dure riescono a creare un senso di angoscia stemperato dai momenti più melodici. Pur essendo auto-prodotto è fatto davvero bene, suoni chiari e puliti che catturano l’ascoltatore rendendolo partecipe di angoscia e oscurità. Un lavoro davvero interessante e pienamente promosso.
