"Under a Godless Veil" is the new work of the Swedish gothic doom metal band Draconian, a record that is positioned as one of the highest points of the genre in this 2020 and written as a concept about the Sethians, namely members of an agnostic current that developed between the II and III century AD founded on the veneration of Seth (according to the agnostic texts third son of Adam and Eve) who gave rise to part of the human race.
The Sethian idea affirms that the world was generated by inferior and cruel divinities created by mistake by Sophie (central figure within the concept) last component of the Pleroma (the superior divine world) who imposed on Adam and Eve to generate a third son Seth endowed with divine spirituality and able to counteract the imperfect and cruel nature of Cain and Abel. The first obstacle to be faced by the band, overcome meanwhile with full marks, is precisely to recreate with intense suggestiveness in music what the concept tells and from the very first song it is clear how Draconian have hit the target, SORROW OF SOPHIA puts in evidence the phenomenal characteristics of the band, the voices of Anders Jacobson (Growl) and Heike Langhans (Clean) introduce and accompany us on this journey where Heike in particular acts as a muse, as a siren who hypnotizes through a class and talent like few others in the world.
Atmosphere, intensity and emotion give way to the heavier Gothic Doom in THE SACRIFICIAL FLAME, where Draconian demonstrate that they no longer have masters and have now become a stable part of the Olympus of their genre and beyond. Worth to mention the thrilling guitar solo that closes the track. LUSTROUS HEART is the exact testimony of what Gothic Doom is, that is heaviness, melody, sweetness and intensity of contrast between good and evil and Draconian are made for this, the whole band seems to have been born to write the story that he tells, with literally draconian outlines.
SLEEPWALKERS is the first single from "Under a Godless Veil", here it is clear how the band has grown from year to year and from album to album, a song written with a suggestiveness and evocation that moves from a delicate and melancholy initial part leaving then room for granite riffs and captivating refrains. The same heavy and granite riffs recur in MOON OVER SABAOTH, in this case it is Anders' growl to reap victims with a song that sounds like a battle cry, really evocative is the speech in the central part with the voice of Heike.
BURIAL FIELDS is the most atmospheric track of the entire work and obviously seems to be written for the voice of Heike, absolute protagonist ... goosebumps!!! THE SETHIAN is the only piece that moves away from the Gothic Doom canons by embracing more modern sounds but the result is still excellent and Draconian’s sound is now distinguishable from all the rest. To be mentioned the work of the rhythm section and the guitar with solos of fine workmanship. CLAWS MARKS ON THE THRONE through its deep melody transmits anguish and anxiety in its initial part, literally swept away in the continuation of the track by the inspiration of Heike still sublime and by a combative Anders. The vocal collaboration between the two artists, in my opinion, is unmatched within today's metal scene. NIGHT VISITOR begins the conclusion of the work and introduces in the most captivating way possible ASCEND INTO DARKNESS, the last piece and masterpiece of "Under a Godless Veil". The Band does everything right and uses a mixture of styles as only the greatest can do, everything conveys exactly what the story wants to tell that is unrest, resentment, anguish and anger towards their own gods that condemn the ascent into darkness. Melody, voices, guitars are intertwined in a whirlwind of emotions that only in few cases have I heard at these levels.
The genre proposed with this masterpiece by Draconian cannot be easily labelled as it is pure emotion and experience that makes us reflect through history. New Gods!!!

“Under a Godless Veil” è il nuovo lavoro dei gothic doom metallers svedesi Draconian, disco che si posiziona come uno dei punti più alti del genere in questo 2020 e scritto come un concept sui Sethiani ovvero membri di una corrente agnostica che si sviluppo tra il II e III secolo dc fondata sulla venerazione di Seth (secondo i testi agnostici terzo figlio di Adamo ed Eva) che diede origine a parte del genere umano.
L’idea Sethiana sostiene come il mondo sia stato generato da divinità inferiori e crudeli create a loro volta per errore da Sophie (figura centrale all’interno del concept) ultimo componente del Pleroma (il mondo divino superiore) che impose ad Adamo ed Eva di generare un terzo figlio Seth dotato di spiritualità divina ed in grado di contrastare la natura imperfetta e crudele di Caino e Abele. Il primo ostacolo da affrontare, ma superato a pieni voti, dalla band è proprio quello di ricreare con intensa suggestività in musica cosa il concept narra e già dal primo brano è chiaro come i Draconian abbiano centrato l’obiettivo, SORROW OF SOPHIA mette in evidenza le caratteristiche fenomenali della band, la voci di Anders Jacobson (Growl) e Heike Langhans (Clean) ci introducono e accompagnano in questo viaggio dove Heike in particolare funge da musa, da sirena che ipnotizza attraverso una classe e talento come pochi al mondo.
Atmosfera, intensità e commozione lasciano spazio al Gothic Doom più heavy in THE SACRIFICIAL FLAME, i Draconian dimostrano di non avere più maestri e di essere diventati ormai parte stabile dell’olimpo del genere e non solo. Da menzionare l’assolo di chitarra da brividi che chiude la traccia. LUSTROUS HEART è l’esatta testimonianza di cosa è il Gothic Doom, ovvero pesantezza, melodia, dolcezza ed intensità di contrasto tra bene e male ed i Draconian sono fatti per questo, tutta la band infatti sembra essere nata per scrivere la storia che racconta, dai contorni letteralmente draconiani.
SLEEPWALKERS è il primo singolo estratto da”Under a Godless Veil”, qui risulta chiaro come la band sia cresciuta di anno in anno e di album in album, una song scritta con una suggestività ed evocazione che da una delicata e malinconica parte iniziale lascia spazio ancora a dei riff granitici e a refrain accattivanti. Gli stessi riff pesanti e granitici riprendono in MOON OVER SABAOTH, in questo caso è il growl di Anders a mietere vittime con un cantato che sembra un grido di battaglia, di rara suggestività il parlato presente nella parte centrale con in sottofondo la voce di Heike.
BURIAL FIELDS è la traccia più atmosferica dell’intera opera e ovviamente sembra essere scritta per la voce di Heike assoluta protagonista…da pelle d’oca!!! THE SETHIAN è l’unico pezzo che si allontana dai canoni Gothic Doom abbracciando sonorità più moderne ma il risultato è ancora egregio ed il sound dei Draconian è ormai distinguibile da tutto il resto. Da menzionare il lavoro della sezione ritmica e alla chitarra con assoli di pregevole fattura. CLAWS MARKS ON THE THRONE attraverso la sua profonda melodia trasmette angoscia ed inquietudine nella sua parte iniziale, letteralmente spazzata via nel prosieguo della traccia dall’ispirazione di Heike ancora sublime e da un battagliero Anders. La collaborazione vocale tra i due artisti, a mio parere, non ha paragoni all’interno dell’odierna scena metal nel suo complesso. NIGHT VISITOR da inizio al termine dell’opera ed introduce nel modo più accattivante possibile ASCEND INTO DARKNESS ultimo pezzo e capolavoro di “Under a Godless Veil”. La Band fa tutto bene e utilizza una mescolanza di stili come solo i più grandi sanno fare, il tutto trasmette esattamente quello che la storia vuol raccontare ovvero inquietudine, risentimento, angoscia e rabbia verso i propri dei che condannano all’ascesa verso l’oscurità. Melodia, voci, chitarre si intrecciano in un un turbinio di emozioni che solo in alcuni casi ho ascoltato a questi livelli.
Il genere proposto con questa opera magna dai Draconian non è più etichettatile in quanto si tratta di pura emozione ed esperienza che attraverso la storia fa riflettere. Nuovi Dei!!!
